Making it!
by Chris Tyrell
This is a wonderful and inspiring book, also about various artists and how they've become successful. I have really become encouraged in reading this book, that local artists can really be successful by many avenues available to us. There are very applicable suggestions based on their experiences. I'm in the process of working on ideas gleaned from this great book. Available at Opus Art Stores.

The Museum of Lost Wonder
by Jeff Hoke
Ha-Ha, Ha-Ha!!!! The delight I have in going through this book just makes me giddy!!! It's format is that of a guide book through a museum, but there is also philosophical questions, myths, discussions, illustrations of scientific concepts and best of all - models that you can either cut out of the book ("quel horror!") or copy and paste onto card to build your own three dimensional model of "The Theatre of the Mind", the "Hypnotrope", the "Path of Destiny Peep-Show" and more - seven in all!!! It's so wonderful that I can hardly stand it! "Jeff Hoke has been creating museum exhibits for the last twenty-five years .....he currently holds the postition of Senior Exhibit Designer at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, California." This book is an experience in "What is 'reality' all about?"
You can see more at the website http://www.lostwonder.org/ Enjoy the ride!!!

The Illuminated Rumi
Translations and commentary by Coleman Barks
Illuminations by Michael Green
Oh, such a magical and inspiring book!! Coleman Barks translations are so eloquent and other dimensional - they send me to a deeper, richer place in myself, a place of tranquility : transcendent and transformational. The illustrations are equal to the words, mystical in how they nudge that unspoken understanding.

Women Who Run With the Wolves

This book has so many folktales that are told in such a deep-hearted manner! Her voice resonates so deeply within me, I love the way she tells these classic, archetypal stories. This link is the book order for Amazon, but scrolling down there are two reviews about this book http://www.amazon.ca/Women-Wolves-Clarissa-Pinkola-Est%C3%A9s/dp/0345409876

The Unconventional Guide to Art and Money: Thriving As an Artist Without Selling Out
by Zoe Westof and Chris Guillebeau
This is a great book that I bought on his website and downloaded. It's full of great ideas, support, successful artists' interviews. Weekly emails, online support and internet connections while I read the PDF book. It has given me the first steps to creating a presence that is uniquely mine in the world - beyond my hands-on creative activity of painting. I see the connections to all aspects of my life in supporting myself as an artist - marketing, personality, finding "my people/my tribe" and passing ownership of my artwork on to others!!! Definitely worth it!! http://unconventionalguides.com/art.htm

The Artist's Way
by Julia Cameron
This is the book that started it all - well almost!! I received this book as a gift and plunged whole-heartedly into it. It was a life transformation, starting with the "Morning Pages". I became more attuned to my inner child and a much more successful and creative person due to this connection. I encourage everyone I meet who is struggling, to start with these pages and the connection through letters, to their inner child. It's magical and amazing!! Making time for ourselves is the most rewarding thing we can do for ourselves and the world - this is where all healing springs from and is shared with our friends, families and community.http://www.theartistsway.com/

No More Secondhand Art - Awakening the Artist Within
by Peter London Shambhala Publications, Inc., 1989
Also another book that "started it all". It was really the first time that I heard supportive words describing my work. Words that described what the instructor saw, without judgement or suggestions. It took my art at face value, being matter of fact in describing colour, shape, form, leading me to discover that they gave me a "sense" of - something deeper. I realized that every aspect of creating on the canvas was conveying something I had no words for and was discovering in the process. The Hummingbird
by Eleanor Farjeon Published in 1937 by Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York
My mom read this book many years ago and always wanted a copy of her own. I was able to buy a copy through Amazon.com second hand books. My copy is a discarded library book from San Jose State College!! It's a wonderful, magical story set in the '30s but chapters bubble up from Louis XV, an integral part of the puzzle. It is transcendent and gives me a feeling I can't describe, but which I feel somehow is more real than my daily life!!
